Staffing

The Fairmont Fire Department is manned 24 hours a day, every day of the year. In charge of the department is the Chief, whose office is located in Central Station. The Chief works day shift, and is assisted by an administrative assistant. Also assisting the Chief is the Training and Fire Prevention Officer who oversees the department's training regimen, fire prevention and inspection programs, and acts as the department's safety and health officer.

The operations division offers 24-hour protection firefighters divided equally into 3 shifts of 13. Each shift is commanded by a Captain, stationed in Central station, and assisted by 2 Lieutenants.

Each firefighter begins his or her career as a probationary firefighter and is required to complete a 3-year apprenticeship program through the United States Department of Labor. All promotions are done internally and are tested.
