Smoke Alarm Program

The Fairmont Fire Department offers home fire-safety inspections and free smoke alarm installations for our residents who may be unable to do it themselves.

This program is offered to owner-occupied homes in the city limits only.

At no cost to the resident, the Fairmont Fire Department will perform:

  • Testing and inspection of smoke alarms.
  • Replacement of batteries in smoke alarms.
  • One-time installation of one smoke alarm for every bedroom and one additional alarm for every floor of residential occupancies.
  • Installation of one Carbon Monoxide alarm in homes with CO risk.
  • Information and education on home fire safety.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do I live in the city limits?

A: Check out this map to determine if your home is within the corporate limits of the city of Fairmont.

Q: What if I live outside the city limits?

A: You can contact your local fire department that protects your home to see if they offer alarm installations.
You can also click here to contact the American Red Cross to request alarm installation.

Q: Can I just stop and pick up free alarms?

A: No, we only offer free alarms when they are installed by our trained firefighters. This is to ensure that alarms are installed correctly to best protect your family.

Q: How do I know if I need new smoke alarms?

A: Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. If your alarms are older than that, or if you hear a chirp every 30-60 seconds after replacing the battery, your alarm needs replaced.

Q: What if I rent?

A: If you live in a rental, your landlord or leasing company is required by city ordinance to maintain smoke alarms in your rental unit. If your landlord refuses to maintain safe and working smoke alarms, contact the City of Fairmont Code Enforcement by calling 304-366-6211, ext. 303.
